Starting a newly seeded lawn can feel a bit like raising a newborn—you want to give it the very best start, but it’s not always clear what to do (or what to avoid). The good news? With the right approach in those first few weeks, you can set your lawn up for lush, healthy growth that lasts. Here’s your quick guide to making smart choices and giving your fresh lawn every chance to thrive!
Day 0 – Seeding Day
✅ Check irrigation system – make sure sprinklers have no leaks and give full coverage.
✅ Mow & edge – cut lawn to 2", bag clippings, and scalp edges with a weed eater for better seed-to-soil contact.
✅ Aerate heavily.
✅ Seed rate:
Overseeding: 5 lbs per 1,000 sqft
Bare/thin areas: 10 lbs per 1,000 sqft
✅ Apply starter fertilizer.
✅ Start watering schedule immediately.
🚫 No pets or heavy traffic on seeded areas.
Days 1–14 (Germination Period)
💧 Water: Frequent, light waterings throughout the day to keep top ½" of soil moist (not soggy).
🚫 Mowing: None.
🚫 Traffic: Avoid walking or playing on it.
🚫 Weed control: No herbicides.
Weeks 3–4 (Early Growth)
💧 Water: Transition to once daily, deeper soakings.
✂ Mowing:
Only when grass reaches 4" tall.
Remove ½" maximum.
Use push mower only.
Avoid watering the day before and day of mowing.
🚶♂️ Traffic: Light, minimal only.
🚫 Weed control: No sprays; pull large weeds by hand.
Weeks 5–6 (Establishing Stage)
💧 Water: Every 2–3 days, deep watering. Adjust for rainfall.
✂ Second mow: 3.5–4" height, push mower, dry lawn, no more than ⅓ of blade removed.
🌱 Fertilize: Light starter fertilizer application.
🚫 Herbicides: Still avoid; mowing helps with weed suppression.
Weeks 6–8 (Strengthening Stage)
💧 Water: Deep soak 1–2 times per week.
✂ Third mow: Resume slightly more frequent cutting.
🌿 Weed control:
Broadleaf weed killer allowed only if lawn has had 2–3 full mowings and looks healthy.
Months 3–6 (Mature Stage)
💧 Water: Follow seasonal guidelines. In winter, water when temps allow and no precipitation occurs (prevents winter kill).
✂ Mowing: Resume normal schedule.
🌿 Weed control: Normal treatments and pre-emergents in the correct season.
Pro Tips
🔪 Keep mower blades sharp! Your young grass is easily damaged.
🚫 Avoid heavy traffic, furniture, or equipment for first 2–3 months.
🍂 Keep leaves off lawn to prevent smothering seedlings or matting down young grass.
